OK so I’m very excited about The Phantom Band’s upcoming album. How much can I be spoilt, there’s already a free White Denim album out now and Women have released their second album, not to mention this Awesome website.

Anyway, Phantom Band have done a BBC Radio Scotland session. Skip to 20 minutes in to hear the first track and avoid listening to Biffy Clyro. You’ve got three more days to listen, needless to say I’ve already bagged my own hard copy.

Well I’ve just applied for more radio work. Hopefully I’ll get it, now I’ve got to find some BBC stuff to do. That wasn’t much of a blog post was it? Sorry, here’s something to make up for it. Slint’s amazing song Good Morning Captain has been made into a children’s book. I kid ye not:

Woah, what a cheesey title! Apologies to everyone. I’m always on the lookout for ideas to make into radio programmes and I could easily do something about the amazing sounds seals make. Not the “Arghh! Arghh! Arghh!” fin-clapping fiasco you see in Sea Life centres, no way! It’s how they communicate underwater. They sound like out-of-tune AM radios, or 1970s modular synths…They do… Check it:

In October, The Phantom Band are releasing their second album The Wants. Their first album, Checkmate Savage was amazing. I was completely addicted to it. Folk Song Oblivion, and the last song (which I can’t remember the name of off the top of my head, and all the songs before and inbetween were amazing (I’m a big fan of the word AMAZING). I still haven’t seen them live…godamnit! Come to Bournemouth!

Anyway, while I wait for them to come to the seaside, I think they’re going to trendy old Brighton instead, here’s a snippet of their new album. The start sounds like they’re manicuring a giant’s toe nails. Again, a GOOD THING.

It’s all very bizarre this. Click on this link now at 22:54 6th September 2010 and you’ll see a live set…I think, by Olo Worms. Well, I say live, it’s like a powerpoint presentation done in paint with swirly guitars and beats going on. This, I declare, is a GOOD THING.

If anyone says that Bournemouth doesn’t have cool gigs then I just point them to the Club Anemone nights. There’s one going on tonight (2nd Sept 2010) in the iBar. I have no idea who any of them are, but I trust Pual who always gets in amazing bands into our sleepy seaside town.

ARBOREA

Hailing from Maine, the husband and wife duo of Shanti and Buck Curran craft songs that hang floating in their own uniquely distilled (moonshine) essence, merging anglo-folk influences with blues and American folk traditions to create deeply atmospheric sounds, as evocative of deep dark woods as of boggy swamps and fir-topped mountain passes.

Shanti’s hushed vocals, somewhat reminiscent of Vashti Bunyan or Linda Perhacs, are backed by acoustic and steel guitar, finely-picked banjo, ukelele, and an assortment of percussive and bowed string accompaniments.

Buck was also responsible for compiling the UN World Food Program benefit album Leaves Of Life, featuring contemporaries such as Marissa Nadler, Alela Diane and Devendra Banhart, and, more recently, for compiling a tribute to Robbie Basho on Important Records.

TWO WINGS

Two Wings is a new project based around the song-writing of Ben Reynolds (guitar) and Hanna Tuulikki (vocals), joined by Kenny Wilson (bass) and David Hayward (drums). Hanna and Ben’s archetypal songs of love and death, enlivened by Ben’s prodigious guitar work (he was original guitarist for Trembling Bells) and Hanna’s remarkable keening vocals (more normally found centre stage on her recordings with Nalle), entranced all that witnessed their last gig at Ibar, so very excited to see what wonders this new formation might deliver!

Plinth is the sometime alias of prolific local instrumentalist Michael Tanner. As well as his personal projects, he might well be found as a part of Directorsound, Tyneham House, United Bible Studies, or The Rural Tradition, and is a serial collaborator (recent releases include collaborations with Nick Palmer of Directorsound, and Glen Johnson, of Textile Ranch/Piano Magic fame).

My first bend

Boo! well after poking around in this Phonics keyboard by Chad Valley I found some ace bends using a potentiometer (a turnable knob to you and me). Unfortunately due to over zealous soldering to the chip I appear to have broken it. However I have learnt something… Never solder anything directly to the chip, instead, follow the bending points from the chip to where they next pop out of the circuit board and solder in the bend there. Therefore negating the need for a super-duper thin soldering iron and a grip as steady and static as Radio 2′s daytime schedule.

Now the poor thing doesn’t turn on. I did record the sounds it made so I’ll upload them soon.

Behold the poor toy’s destruction…I’ve spotted another on ebay and I’m trying to get the man to sell it to me early. Not long to go until I have to hand in this master’s project…eek!

Vital Weekly

Ok so the website might not look like much but Vital Weekly is a massive podcast that appears…well…weekly. Featuring all sorted of bizarre mostly field recording-ish/ambient noise stuff. The on I’m currently listneing to begins with a song, if you can call it that, where in each ear you hear an American voice continually repeating “Obama Osama” over and over again. I was trying to make rhythms in my head. It kind of worked, and was really bizarre listening to it as I approached the junction at the end of my road while cycling. It possibly could be quite dangerous…

Anyway, I’d recommend the podcast, you get a massive email reviews page (which I never seem to get all the way through) and a fantastic podcast.

Festival radio crazy!

Well, after the brilliance that was working at Glastonbury making the Shangri-La Daily Podcast I’m up for even more festival radio-ness. Today it turns out I’m working at both the Cambridge Folk Festival with the lovely Smooth Operations AND I’m working on Bestival FM. Wicked!

I’m really looking forward to the Cambridge Folk Festival because Mark Radcliffe will be there. One of my radio heroes! Other news, I’m sorting out an interview with Reed Ghazala the inventor of Circuit Bending and on Thursday I’m interviewing Squidfanny…yes Squidfanny. Because of all the work experience I’ve had over the summer I’ve ended up being really behind in my Master Project…hopefully I’m catching up now…hopefully!
